Conway welcomes increase of Ryanair passengers to Shannon Airport
1st December 2014 - Aoife Carragher
Fine Gael Clare Senator, Martin Conway, has today (Monday) welcomed the announcement that Ryanair has grown its Shannon Airport 2014 traffic by 300,000 passengers to 750,000 passengers.
“Today’s announcement that 13 million Ryanair passengers have passed through the airport since is a great endorsement for the new independent Shannon Airport.
“I am delighted that Ryanair, which is one of the largest airline carriers in Europe, has committed to providing these additional numbers to Shannon. Shannon is now a pivotal part of the tourism package in the West of Ireland as it is the gateway to the Wild Atlantic Way.
“After being released from the constrictions of the Dublin Airport Authority, Shannon Airport is now succeeding as an independent entity. Shannon Airport’s strong momentum across 2014 has continued with passenger numbers for October showing a 28% increase on the same period twelve months ago. The airport is now on track to see 1.7 million passengers pass through this year.
“The scrapping of the air travel tax and continuation of the retention of the 9% VAT rate applicable to the tourism sector announced by the Government, played a pivotal role in the decision by Ryanair to increase its operations in Shannon.”
