Buttimer pays tribute to Secretary General for dedication to health service

9th August 2014 - Aoife Carragher

Fine Gael Cork South Central TD and Chairperson of the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Health and Children, Jerry Buttimer, has thanked Dr Ambrose McLoughlin for his work as Secretary General of the Department of Health and wished him well in his new role with Healthy Ireland.

“I would like to put on record my thanks and appreciation of the work done by Dr Ambrose McLoughlin as Secretary General at the Department of Health over the last number of years.   In my role as Chairperson of the Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children I have worked with Dr McLoughlin on a range of policy and legislative issues. His experience, knowledge and dedication to improving our health service have always been evident.

“Dr McLoughlin is taking up a new role overseeing the implementation of the Healthy Ireland initiative. I know that his vast experience of the health system will prove a vital resource in developing this policy.

“Healthy Ireland is a new national programme to improve the health and wellbeing of the nation. Over the next 10 to 20 years this policy aims to increase the number of people who are healthy at all stages of life and reduce health inequalities.   This is an important refocussing of health policy, placing an emphasis on long term health and not just tackling illness.

“I wish Dr McLoughlin every success in his new role and I am confident that his knowledge will enable this new initiative to be a success.”
