Almost 4,000 more people at work in the Midlands – McFadden

27th August 2014 - Aoife Carragher

Fine Gael TD for Longford/Westmeath, Gabrielle McFadden, has welcomed the latest CSO figures which show that almost 4,000 more people are at work in the Midlands.

“It is encouraging to see that the jobs market continues to grow in this region where 3,800 more people are at work since this time last year.

“Of course, we are very much in need of further employment opportunities but I am pleased to see that the Midlands economy is moving in the right direction.

“What is particularly encouraging is that these new jobs are full-time jobs, showing the sustainability of our   recovery.

“On the national front, the CSO figures show a continued improvement in the jobs market, with 31,600 jobs created in the last 12 months and more than 70,000 since the launch of the Action Plan for Jobs in 2012. This means employment is at its highest level since 2009.

“The unemployment rate is now down to 11.3%, its lowest in 5 years from a peak of 15.1% in February 2012.   This is certainly a big improvement but we want to see more and job creation remains a top priority for the Government.

“As a member of this Government, I am committed to ensuring the recovery is felt in all parts of Longford and Westmeath.”
