8th August 2013 - Richard Bruton TD
Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, Richard Bruton TD, today [Thursday] announced the creation of a software development team by online discount retailer Overstock.com in Sligo.
Employing over 1,300 people worldwide, Overstock.com is an online discount retailer based in Salt Lake City, Utah. Started in 1999, Overstock.com sells a broad range of products including furniture, rugs, bedding, electronics, clothing, jewellery, and cars.
The investment by Overstock.com is supported by the Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation through IDA Ireland.
Making the announcement, Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, Richard Bruton TD said: ‘A key part of the Government’s Action Plan for Jobs is ensuring that we support job-creation across the entire country. We have put in place a number of measures to deliver on this, including the Succeed in Ireland scheme, which has seen the delivery of multinational investment to regional locations which would not normally come onto the radar of IDA companies.
‘Today’s announcement that leading on-line retailer Overstock.com is to establish a key technology group here, with the creation of more than 45 jobs in Sligo is great news for the north-west, and is a significant endorsement of both Sligo and Ireland in delivering the needs of multinational companies.’
Steve Tryon, SVP Human Capital Management & International Business at Overstock.com said ‘Overstock is an ambitious, dynamic and technology led company that is excited with the potential that Sligo and Ireland offers. The Irish development team will be involved centrally in many existing activities and will lead on several new and initiatives associated with our International expansion.’
Commenting on the announcement, Barry O’Leary, CEO of IDA Ireland said, ‘Sligo is one of Ireland’s Gateway locations. IDA Ireland markets Ireland’s Gateway locations to companies across the world. Companies like Overstock.com are mobile investors and the availability of the right staff in the software development sector is a key attraction to Sligo.”
