McFadden hails launch of ‘world class’ athletics arena in Athlone
5th February 2013 - Deborah Sweeney
Fine Gael Longford/Westmeath TD, Nicky McFadden, has hailed the official launch of the International Athletics Arena at Athlone Institute of Technology (AIT) as a significant day for Irish athletics in the Midlands.
Welcoming An Taoiseach, Enda Kenny TD, to the constituency today for the official opening, Deputy McFadden said: ‘Today marks a hugely positive day for Athlone and the Midlands as the International Athletics Arena is officially opened. It is truly a world class facility which will open up huge opportunities, not only for our current Irish athletes but for children in the community who dream of becoming top class athletes.
“The €10 million track opened to the public last month when it hosted the Athletics Ireland Combined Event Championships and the Athletics Ireland Open Indoor Games. Those who have already been to the arena have commented on the high standard of the facility.
“This arena compares with the best in the world and I want to commend the President of AIT, Professor Ciarán O’Catháin, in particular, for the stellar work he has done and to his dedication to making this project a reality.
“I also want to thank Minister of State at the Department of Transport, Tourism & Sport, Michael Ring TD, and the entire Department for their support.
“I am particularly delighted that An Taoiseach, Enda Kenny TD, is in a position to visit Athlone today to preside over the official launch.”
