Conway welcomes first new Flybe service for Shannon

Fine Gael Clare Senator, Martin Conway, has welcomed the announcement that Flybe is to operate a year-round return service between Shannon Airport and Glasgow. The three time weekly service, beginning in May, is expected to bring over 10,000 additional passengers through Shannon this year.

“I am delighted that Flybe, which is one of the largest airline carriers in Europe, has decided to provide this new route. The airline has not flown out of Shannon for seven years and I hope that this will pave the way for a more substantial return to Shannon Airport by the carrier.

“After being unshackled from the constraints of the Dublin Airport Authority, Shannon Airport now has the best possible chance to succeed and compete for new routes and airlines.   This announcement is a clear endorsement of the Government’s decision to develop Shannon as an independent entity.  

“The forging of links between Glasgow and the Shannon region offers a significant economic and tourism opportunity, as Glasgow is the third largest city in the UK, and the largest in Scotland.

“Considering the difficult economic climate, it is very encouraging that Flybe has decided to operate this new route. This announcement is an extremely positive endorsement for the new independent Shannon Airport and I hope it is indicative of a bright future for both Shannon Airport and the wider region.”
