1st July 2013 - Sarah Meade
Fine Gael Clare Senator, Martin Conway has today (Monday) welcomed the announcement of €30 million in funding from the Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, and an additional €10 million from industry partners, to support world-class research at the Synthesis & Solid State Pharmaceutical Centre (SSPC) based at the University of Limerick.
“I am delighted that this research centre of international significance will be located in the Midwest region. It is a major investment in support of the pharmaceutical industry in Ireland which is responsible for over 60,000 Irish jobs and exports over €50 billion annually.
“Ireland is home to eight out of the world’s top ten pharmaceutical companies and six of the top ten blockbuster drugs are manufactured in this country. This centre will further strengthen the position of the pharmaceutical companies in Ireland by conducting research to make pharmaceutical manufacturing more efficient, cost effective, and environmentally sustainable.
“This development is a very welcome boost for the Midwest region. The research centre, operating from the University of Limerick, will provide the region with an ideal opportunity to tap into the potential offered by the pharmaceutical industry and will ultimately lead to the creation of jobs in the region.”
