Collins welcomes funding for Millstreet Bridge and knock-on effect from tourism
29th May 2013 - Deborah Sweeney
Fine Gael Cork North West Deputy, Áine Collins, has welcomed the announcement of funding for the building of an access bridge at Millstreet as part of the walking route link that will run from Dursey Island in Cork to the Ulster Way in Blacklion in Co. Cavan.
“The announcement today of €105,750 for a new pedestrian, cycling and wheelchair access bridge at Millstreet in Co. Cork by the Minister of State, Michael Ring, will come as great news to long-distance walkers, hikers and local businesses in the area.
“The bridge will act as a link on the Beara Breifne walking route which stems all the way from Cork to Cavan and takes in all four provinces. It is being funded by Fáilte Ireland under the Tourism Capital Investment Programme.
“The route traces the 1602 march by Donal Cam, Chieftain of the O’Sullivan Beare clan, after the Battle of Kinsale and the bridge will be built at the very same spot in Millstreet where O’Sullivan Beara crossed the River Blackwater.
“It is expected that the bridge will be completed in 2014 and not only will it act as a draw for those with an interest in history, it will draw hikers and outdoor visitors to the region. The Government has been steadfastly focused on the best ways to encourage visitors to Ireland and to inspire Irish people to holiday at home.
“We have some of the most scenic routes to be found anywhere in the world right here on our doorstep. There is now better value for money to be had in Ireland than has been the case for years. Hotels and restaurants are focused on getting people through the doors and the lower rate of VAT introduced by the Government on tourist-related services means that holiday makers are better able to take advantage of what Ireland has to offer.
“By encouraging sectors such as tourism, we are getting people back to work, stimulating the domestic economy and restoring our reputation internationally that Ireland is a worthwhile investment. I am delighted that the bridge has been given the green light as far is funding is concerned and I look forward to having it as the latest addition to Millstreet at some stage next year.”
