October completion date for roll-out of 100 MBS broadband in Galway Schools

6th July 2012 - Senator Sean Kyne

Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources has confirmed to Galway West Deputy Sean Kyne that Galway’s secondary school should have 100 mbs broadband access by October of this year.

The information was supplied in a reply to a Parliamentary Question tabled by Deputy Kyne to the Minister.

Commented Deputy Kyne: “As with many sectors, high speed broadband internet access has become an invaluable tool for education which supports teachers and enhances the learning experience. It’s vital that the opportunities and benefits which Information Technology can bring are available to all schools regardless of their geographic location.

“I was very encouraged by the Minister’s commitment to rectify the shortcomings of previous years by targeting the 14 counties, including Galway, of the Border, Midlands and Western Region for the first phase of this investment plan which involves over 200 schools.

“The summer months are the ideal time for infrastructural upgrades to schools and educational facilities and following agreement with the Government departments concerned and the National Centre for Technology in Education as well as the examination and acceptance of tenders, it’s hoped work will begin without delay so that the October deadline can be met,” concluded Deputy Kyne.
