Deputy Sean Conlan Welcomes Confirmation That The Future Of J1 Visas Has Been Secured

Deputy Sean Conlan has welcomed confirmation that the future of J1 visas for Irish students has been secured. There was concern that the Immigration Bill which went through the US Senate recently would result in the imposition of burdensome charges and levies on Irish students seeking to travel to the US on a J1 visa. Other proposed stipulations included students having to secure employment before leaving Ireland for the US. Deputy Conlan said that “the Government has put a huge amount of effort into lobbying the US Senate to amend the proposed legislation and thankfully the new proposals have been dropped and Irish students can continue to avail of J1 work and travel visas during their summer holidays. Last summer almost 10,500 Irish students travelled to the US on a J1 visa. I am delighted that the future of the J1 visa has been secured for the benefit and enjoyment of so many Irish students who wish to spend a summer working and travelling abroad.”
