Climate change is the greatest challenge to humanity and we must work together to tackle it
8th April 2013 - James Bannon TD
Fine Gael TD for Longford / Westmeath, James Bannon, has today (Thursday) urged every member of society to get involved in preventing climate change and the harmful damage it can have on our environment. Deputy Bannon was speaking following a meeting of the Oireachtas Environment Committee to discuss climate change with vulnerable communities in the developing world.
“Climate change is the greatest challenge to humanity. It affects our ability to produce food and water and it has huge ramifications for how we organise ourselves and society. The earth has warmed up by 0.8 degrees in the last century and it is only now that people are coming to grips with the seriousness of this matter.
“The scientific case for action is beyond doubt. What is needed is the collective will to act and it must be at the heart of public policy in everything we do. Already, we are seeing great progress in the areas of wind farming, the solar panel grant and the biofuel grant.
“I am encouraging everyone to get involved and work together to tackle climate change in our communities. Together, we can make a difference and provide a clean and safe environment for our children and future generations.”
