Strategic framework will allow communities to engage on wind energy planning – Flanagan
31st July 2013 - Charles Flanagan TD
Laois/Offaly TD and Fine Gael Chairman Charlie Flanagan has said that the publication of a policy and planning framework to guide An Bord Pleanala when considering wind energy export proposals will ensure that local communities in the Midlands can directly feed into a national policy for wind export. Deputy Flanagan was speaking after Minister Rabbitte instructed officials in his department to develop an overall policy and planning framework
“There has been a considerable amount of debate in the Midlands surrounding the proposed construction of wind turbines in the county. It is important that there is an open and transparent process for any individual or community that wishes to input their concerns around wind farms. This framework will allow for all stakeholders to be consulted directly on national policy”
“The Department of Communications in conjunction with the Department of Environment will also conduct a further consultation process later this year. This process will focus on a targeted review of certain aspect of the 2006 wind energy guidelines which I believe to be outdated and obsolete. This review will examine the manner in which the current guidelines address key issues of community concern such as noise, proximity, visual amenity and any other potential impacts.”
This is an important opportunity for communities in the Midlands to engage with the process. No community will have wind farms foisted upon them unwillingly and I would urge them to use these forums to air their concerns. We need a calm and reasoned debate on this issue from all sides.”
