94% of GPs in South Tipperary now signed up for free under 6s GP care – Coonan
17th August 2015 - Aoife Carragher
Fine Gael TD for Tipperary, Noel Coonan has said that following a slow start, 94% of GPs in South Tipperary have now signed up to take part in the free GP Service for under 6s.
“The latest figures now show that 94% of GPs in South Tipperary and 97% of GPs in North Tipperary have signed up to take part in the new Free GP Service. This is great news for families in Tipperary who can now avail of the Free GP Service.
“Free GP care was a key Fine Gael election commitment and it will result in real savings for families. It is important that we change the health system from one that only treats sick people to one that keeps people well; providing free access to GP care will make a significant difference in achieving this goal.
“On 5th August, free GP care also became available for over 70s who did not have a medical card or free GP visit card. As a result, for the first time, the eldest and youngest in our society can now access GP care without being charged
“I would encourage any parents, who have not yet registered their child, or over 70s who have not already done so, to sign up for the free GP service. I am delighted that the excellent GPs who work here in Tipperary have signed up to the scheme in such great numbers.”
