60 new jobs for Cork signals Govt’s plan is working – Murphy

21st March 2013 - Deborah Sweeney

Fine Gael Cork North Central Deputy, Dara Murphy, has welcomed the announcement of 60 new jobs at McAfee in Cork where the company already employs 342 people.

“The decision by McAfee to create 60 new jobs in it new Global R&D Centre of Excellence in Cork is excellent news and further cements Cork’s place as a hub for ICT investment. I met with the Board of McAfee in Silicon Valley as part of a delegation when I was Lord Mayor of Cork with a view to furthering the company’s expansion in Cork. The continued efforts of the Government in targeting the ICT sector for future growth and development appears to be paying dividends as this announcement comes on the same day that Yahoo! is set to create 200 new jobs in Dublin.

“Getting our people back to work is the single biggest challenge facing this Government. By setting targets through the Action Plan for Jobs and monitoring progress on a quarterly basis, we can create the right environment for big companies to come to Ireland or to expand operations here.

“The reasons for the company being able to expand in Cork, centre on the educated workforce that comprises highly qualified graduates with technical, language and customer service skills. The positive relationship that has been developed with the Irish Government has also been cited as a contributing factor in helping the business to remain competitive.

“Recruitment for the new R&D jobs is already underway so software engineers who are in search of employment in Cork should have a look at what’s on offer. Ireland’s positioning in Europe has allowed McAfee to base its European headquarters here, giving the company unrivalled access to EU Member States and the countries of the Middle East.

“These jobs have been supported by the IDA and the Department of Enterprise. Eleven thousand jobs have been created by targeting the ICT sector, helping to secure Ireland’s reputation as a hub for technological enterprise. I am delighted that these jobs are coming to Cork and what that will mean not only for the people who secure them but also for the domestic economy in Cork.”
