170 new jobs a vote of confidence in Carlow – Deering

16th October 2018 - Pat Deering TD

The announcement of 170 new jobs at a local leading pharmaceutical company is a vote of confidence in Carlow, a Fine Gael TD has said.

Carlow Deputy Pat Deering has welcomed the news that MSD will construct a second manufacturing facility at its existing site in Carlow with the creation of 170 new positions.

The new facility will focus on the production of vaccines and biologics and there will also be an expansion of warehouse and laboratory services at the site.

Recruitment for the new facility will commence immediately and it is intended that the new manufacturing operations will commence in 2023.

Deputy Deering said: “This new facility is another vote of confidence in Carlow and the highly skilled work force we have here.

“It is also no doubt a reflection of the increased talent pool we will have locally thanks to the new technological university in the south east.

“The decision of this international company to further invest in Carlow is a real testament to the talent of the current Carlow team and reinforces MSD’s commitment to Ireland, further strengthening their 50-year strong legacy here.

“Such investment is critical to our communities. When a significant number of jobs such as this are announced – 170 today and 120 just last year, it provides a boost to all.

“The new employees will need homes to live in and will in turn invest in the local economy. Our work in government has a knock on effect for all, not just the company who initially feel positive benefits,” Deputy Deering concluded.

Currently employing over 400 staff, MSD Carlow opened in 2008 as MSD’s first vaccines facility outside of the US. The expansion is as a result of continuing increased global demand for MSD’s medicines and vaccines.

MSD’s continued investment in Ireland is due to continued access to highly-skilled employees as well as collaborative partnerships with Government and Third Level institutions.
