11 housing projects to begin in Carlow/Kilkenny as part of Government social housing strategy – FitzGerald

5th May 2015 - Fine Gael Press Office

Cllr David FitzGerald, Fine Gael Bye Election Candidate for Carlow/Kilkenny has said today that 11 new housing projects are to begin in Carlow/Kilkenny, a total investment of over €25 million as part of the first phase of the Government’s Social Housing Strategy.

“Last month the Minister for the Environment Alan Kelly and the Minister for Housing, Paudie Coffey announced that over €61 million would be invested in Carlow/Kilkenny to provide social housing. Today we learn that construction is to begin on more than a third of that tranche.

In Carlow:

·          24 units will be built at Royal Oak, Bagnelstown to the value of €3.4 million

·          4 houses will be constructed on Pound Lane, Borris to the value of €400,000

·          2 rural cottages will be built in Rathvilly and Tullow to the value of €280,000

·          14 homes will be constructed at St Patrick’s Park, Tullow to the value of €1.75 million

·          Funding has also been secured for 10 homes in Rathvilly worth €1.5 million and for 8 houses in Myhall and Mount Leinster worth €1.3 million

In Kilkenny:

·          30 houses will be built on St Francis Street in the city to the value of €4.5 million.

·          17 homes will be constructed at Robersthill to the value of €2.45 million

·          There will be 21 new houses at The Butts worth €3.3 million

·          30 units will be constructed in Bolton, Callan to the value of €4.2 million

·          18 new homes will be built in Donaguile, Castlecomer worth €2.6 million

“ Six of the eleven projects in this constituency are shovel ready and will create valuable jobs in the construction sector. Ultimately however these houses will directly provide great relief for those seeking social housing, as well as indirectly benefiting the private rental market.

“Local authorities submitted applications for direct building programmes with approval being granted to over 100 projects nationally in just two months. Further assessments will be carried out throughout the rest of the year with some projects requiring planning approval. All will be completed by 2017.

“These are real homes for local families and they are an indication of the Government’s commitment to deliver. As the Fine Gael bye election candidate I recognise the importance of delivering for the people of Carlow/Kilkenny.”
